Gone are the days where you could pop up a Facebook Page, and 100% of your followers would see your posts and engage with you.

The days of online marketing easiness have disappeared, and it’s getting harder and harder to get people to see what you have to offer the world.

One thing that remains tried and tested and is still working for the world’s top marketers is email marketing.

But how do you reach the people who need your help the most if you have no list, or they have no idea you exist?

This is a problem I faced earlier this year. You see, I have run my own businesses since I was 21 and I have a big list of past and present clients in the two big businesses I have which are our gym/fitness business and my design company.

However, the product I wanted to launch is new. It’s called the ‘Project Me Time’ Program – A fun, strategic planning program for small business owners who want to take the stress and overwhelm out of their businesses and personal lives.

Other than my private coaching clients, and the people in my Mastermind Program, I didn’t have a big list of people to promote this product to who didn’t associate me with either being in fitness or design/branding.

So I started to think about how I could reach people as I was essentially starting from scratch with this new program and I needed to refresh my personal brand.

I decided that the best way to do this was to help more people by giving enormous value to them. By helping them identify with the problems they were having at work and home with regard to stress and overwhelm, I could help them make their lives a bit easier at the same time as building my personal brand.

Here is exactly what I have done to grow this new list from zero to over 500 in just over 30 days..After launching phase one of my new website www.rebeccaflint.com I:

After launching phase one of my new website www.rebeccaflint.com I:

  1. Built a survey to find out what people wanted
  2. Built incredibly valuable lead magnets
  3. Gave people more information for free on my Facebook Lives

How I used a survey to grow my list

How do you know what your audience wants if you don’t ask them? You may wake up one day with the most incredible business idea, but if it’s only you who thinks it’s cool, then no one will buy it. You have to see if this product is something that your Avatar (customer) wants.

Understanding your Avatar is the most important first step in getting your product ready to market. But demographics are not just the only thing you need to know about them.

You also need to know what makes them tick, what keeps them awake at night, what is their biggest source of pain, and ultimately how can your product or service fix that issue for them.

If you don’t know how to help your customer then marketing to them is going to be very hard.

So to find out what makes my Avatar tick, I built a survey to find out exactly what they would want. Then, I asked them if I had the answer to all their problems would they want it, and voilà, those who say yes, and asked for more info were added to my list because they gave me permission to do so.

Now I hear you saying “But Rebecca, how do I find these people to answer my survey.”

Well, I am so glad you asked.

I did a few things… I emailed all my past clients from my personal email address, asking them personally if they could do me a massive favor. I was completely up-front, I said I was launching a new product and since I felt they were someone who would likely fall into my Avatar’s criteria, would they mind answering a few questions. I also said it would take less than 3mins.

Now, because these people know, like and trust me, I got a 98% response rate. Of those people who answered about 74% said they would like more info… Yay!!! My first people on my list. The second thing I did was I asked the same

The second thing I did was I asked the same favor to the people who are in my private Facebook Group – The Alliance. I got a similar response rate to mentioned above.I then did the same thing in another large group I am in on Facebook, however, because this could have been seen as a bit spammy, I bought five gift packs from Agape Skincare to offer as prizes for a randomly selected bunch of people who completed the survey.

How I used Lead Magnets to grow my listI am going to focus on one of my lead magnets because no one wants to be here all day right… so what I did was, I gathered all the info from my survey, and I found that most of the people who answered were not doing annual strategic planning, quarterly planning, weekly planning and therefore their days were in absolute shambles. They were completely stressed and overwhelmed. So to help them out, I created a super helpful tool to help them easily organise their days so that they have more balance and less stress.

They were completely stressed and overwhelmed. So to help them out, I created a super helpful tool to help them easily organise their days so that they have more balance and less stress.
I created a super helpful Daily Planner that they could download for free.
Then, I went back to the new people on my list and offered this to them as a gift. They thought this was super helpful and were grateful for the gift.
Then, I did the same things that I did in my survey and posted it in strategic places.
Now a word to the wise: I didn’t just go and spam every group with this lead magnet; I offered it in places where I genuinely believed it would add massive value. And by doing this, I got incredible compliments and comments. Please, DO NOT GO SPAMMING every group on Facebook, it’s not cool, and your personal brand will be tarnished from it. Always come from a place of service, always.
So, obviously when people downloaded my Daily Planner lead magnet, they were added to my list as well, and I followed the same thank you process as listed above.
My lead magnet sits on my website and continues to be regularly downloaded without me even promoting it. Do you have a lead magnet on your website?
How I used Facebook Lives to grow my list
Now, this one scared the crap out of me, you only have to go and watch the first few videos I did on my Facebook Page to see that this was nerve-racking as hell, BUT it works!!!!
I can’t tell you how many times I have run into people and they say “Wow I am LOVING your Facebook Lives”, or “I have seen your videos”, or (and here’s the one that gets me) “You are so brave, I don’t know how you do it”. And each and every time I am super chuffed that someone actually watched one of my videos.
Videos work guys!
If you are not doing videos, then you absolutely must! Just get the first one done, it’s like ripping off a Band-Aid, once it’s done it doesn’t hurt so bad LOL.
Doing video marketing is the fastest way to building your personal brand online.
Only a small percentage of people are doing it, and it almost doesn’t matter how crap you are, the fact that you have the guts to do it, puts you in the top percentage of people who are marketing online.
Each and every time you do a Facebook Live, you get better at it.
Now, if you do happen to watch my earlier videos, you will see I openly disclose that I am launching a new product, I also say that I am starting from scratch.
Why do I do this?
Well, for starters it’s true, but secondly, by being open, honest and authentic, people are more likely to follow you because by you being like this, you are paving the way for them to also jump online and do Facebook lives, or video marketing too.
But for me, I tell it like it is, I don’t sugar coat anything, so why would I try to be bigger or better than I am, when I am just starting out with this new product. Even though I have been teaching this for years, it’s still a new product to my new market online, so it’s great to be honest about that.
So when you do a video, share a super valuable tip or set of tips, then tell people where to go to find out more info.
For example, you could close by saying… “If you enjoyed this information, please share it, or comment below, and to find out more info about [Insert topic here] just go to [insert website here] and head over to my blog page where you will find out more about [insert topic here]”.
See, it’s super easy 🙂
Ok, so now I have shared with you the top 3 ways that I built my little list from scratch. Your list doesn’t have to be massive. It’s better to be smaller and super engaged, than large and unresponsive. Every single marketer in the world started with a list of zero, you just have to get started,
I’d absolutely love to hear how you built your list, or if you have any questions about this post, please comment below.
If you found this helpful, please show me a little love by sharing this post with your business friends.
Love Rebecca xoxo
